Manchester Open returns on the 4th & 5th October at the Museum of Science and Industry with a full program of workshops!
Come along to create your own Manchester Skyline Artists’ Book with Newmor Wallcoverings and at the same time be the first to get your hands on their brand-new designs! You’ll be learning all the techniques you need to make your own hardback cover and accordion folded pages. By the end of the workshop you will have your own Artists’ Book to take home and all the skills to make as many books as you like! The workshop is run by Newmor Wallcoverings’ Marketing Manager, Eleanor Cardwell Bossick, who has a Master’s degree in Book Arts from the University of Arts, London.

1. Eleanor, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m PR and Marketing Manager at Newmor Wallcoverings. I studied at Loughborough University for a degree in Fine Art with a focus on painting and then I went on a Master’s in Book Arts at UAL. I started my marketing career at Besselink & Jones, Design Centre Chelsea Harbour and since then my job has become my main creative outlet. We’re a creative bunch at Newmor, that’s one of the reasons I love working here so much. I still make books and paintings for fun, but at the moment my main focus is working on a fixer upper house in East London where I live with my wife and two Persian cats.
2. Where can we see your work?
We have completed projects all over Manchester including Malmaison, Manchester House, Hotel Gotham, Manchester Hall and we’re currently supplying a design from our Mid-Century Modern collection to The Birdcage. You can also get in touch with Nicola, who is Newmor’s consultant for Manchester and she will come and show you our full range, or click here.
3. What is your Manchester design highlight?
The Design Manchester Festival is coming up (11 – 22 October). This year there are more than 50 events, including exhibitions, workshops, films, debates, parties and other events at iconic venues around the city. I’m definitely not going to miss the Design City Weekender or Burgess Recovered, an exhibition of re-imagined works from some of Burgess’ covers from all around the world as part of his centenary celebrations. See the full itinerary here.
4. What will people enjoy on your workshop?
Well, firstly you’ll get to see all of Newmor’s new designs, as well as get your hands on some of our best loved textures and custom prints. You’ll also learn the skills you need to make as many hard-back accordion books as you can, you need minimal materials and they’re great for notebooks, sketchbooks and gifts. Bookbinding is a lovely craft, especially for people who love materials, prints and textures, and there are so many different types of books you can make at home simply and inexpensively. Maybe this workshop will just be a starting point!
All welcome and all mark making tools supplied. Just bring a bucket load of enthusiasm for rich visual cultures and let us help unleash your creativity! Spaces are limited so make sure that you have booked your place, click here.
